New Android Smartphone Is Said to Favor Facebook
Facebook will introduce a version of Google’s Android software that will prominently feature the social networking site. The phone will display the user’s Facebook home screen when it is turned on. In addition, Facebook’s camera and messaging apps will be the default apps for the phone itself. All this and more is set to be revealed at an event on April 4 at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
This transition by Facebook is an important one because its struggles to adapt to the increasingly mobile-based market has been well-documented. Facebook has been creating mobile apps separate from its social networking site, such as a private messaging service called Poke and an app for free text messaging called Messenger.
The collaboration between Google and Facebook seems to be a stepping stone for Facebook’s plans of creating its own smartphone. Facebook has hired engineers, including former Apple employees who worked on the iPhone, and has been working to materialize its plans for two years.
